Cancer aftercare at the gynecologist in Dormagen

After active treatment, the care continues. We offer structured gynecological aftercare following current guidelines — and participate in the German Disease Management Program (DMP) for breast cancer.

Elisa Mahlberg, gynecologist in Dormagen – cancer aftercare

Gynecological cancer aftercare is the ongoing care that follows the end of active treatment. It is there for the early detection of a recurrence, for monitoring possible therapy effects, and for counsel on topics such as hormone therapy, menopausal symptoms or bone health. In our practice we provide this aftercare in a structured way following current guidelines — and we participate in the German Disease Management Program (DMP) for breast cancer.

Moving on after treatment — well accompanied

When active treatment ends, a new chapter begins for many patients. Daily life returns, but questions remain: What should I watch for? What is normal after surgery or hormone therapy? When is the next check-up? Aftercare is exactly there for this phase.

We see cancer aftercare not only as an examination but as ongoing care. With clear intervals, with clear interpretation of findings, and with room for questions that only come up later.

How cancer aftercare with Elisa Mahlberg works

The aftercare is structured and follows current German guidelines:

  • History and conversation. We discuss your background, the course of active treatment, current symptoms and possible therapy effects.
  • Clinical examination. Palpation of the breast and the surgical area, gynecological examination, lymph-node check.
  • Imaging via radiology practices. Mammography or breast MRI are arranged through a radiology practice when medically indicated. We then discuss the results with you.
  • Interpretation and next appointment. Findings are explained in plain language, the next aftercare appointment is scheduled per guideline and course.

Aftercare intervals depend on the time elapsed since the initial diagnosis and your individual situation.

DMP breast cancer and gynecological aftercare

The German Disease Management Program (DMP) for breast cancer is a structured care program offered by the statutory health insurers for patients after a breast-cancer diagnosis. It ensures continuous, guideline-based aftercare with regular examinations, clearly defined intervals, and close ties between practice, specialists and hospital. Our practice participates in the DMP — participation is voluntary and free of charge for patients.

What gynecological aftercare covers:

  • Regular clinical check-ups per guideline — palpation, gynecological examination, lymph-node check.
  • Counsel on therapy effects. Hormone therapy, menopausal symptoms, bone health, sexuality after illness.
  • Cooperation with breast centers. For findings or open questions we work with certified breast centers — for example Lukaskrankenhaus Neuss, the University Hospital Düsseldorf or the University Hospital Cologne.
  • Imaging via radiology. Mammography and breast MRI are arranged through radiology practices when indicated.

Our scope: cancer aftercare covers structured gynecological aftercare following active treatment. Active oncological therapy — chemotherapy, radiotherapy or tumor surgery — is not performed at our practice. Psycho-oncological support is arranged where needed via the breast centers or through regional cancer counselling services.

After cancer, it is not only about the next examination. It is about moving on calmly — and knowing that someone is keeping a continuous eye on you.

Frequently asked questions about cancer aftercare

The Disease Management Program (DMP) for breast cancer is a structured care program offered by the German statutory health insurers for patients after a breast-cancer diagnosis. It ensures continuous, guideline-based aftercare with regular examinations, clearly defined intervals, and close ties between practice, specialists and hospital. Participation is voluntary — we are happy to discuss the program with you in detail.

The intervals depend on the guideline and the time elapsed since the initial diagnosis. In the first years after treatment the check-ups are closer together; later the intervals widen. We discuss the exact plan with you individually.

History, clinical examination — palpation of the breast and the surgical area, gynecological examination, lymph-node check — and where useful ultrasound are performed in the practice. Imaging such as mammography or breast MRI is arranged via radiology practices. Active oncological therapy such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy is not performed in our practice.

For findings or open questions we work with certified breast centers — for example Lukaskrankenhaus Neuss, the University Hospital Düsseldorf or the University Hospital Cologne. Which clinic is right for you depends on your background and the recommendation of your treating breast center.

Psycho-oncological support is not part of our practice scope. When needed we refer through the breast centers or through regional cancer counselling services — these services are free of charge and easy to access.

Yes. Structured aftercare following breast cancer is covered by German statutory health insurance, both regularly and within the DMP breast cancer program. Self-pay services such as an additional breast ultrasound without statutory indication are discussed transparently before each use.
