Hormone consultation in Dormagen

Irregular cycles, PMS or PMDD, complaints before and around your period: when hormones are out of balance, you feel it in your whole day. In our hormone consultation we sort through your complaints together and decide individually which diagnostics and which therapy fit your situation.

Elisa Mahlberg, gynecologist in Dormagen – hormone consultation

In the hormone consultation we work on gynecology-related hormone topics: cycle disorders, severe PMS or PMDD, suspected PCOS and perimenopausal symptoms. We look for causes — and build a path with you that is medically sound and fits your life.

When hormones shape your everyday life

Many women describe it similarly: "I am not myself anymore." Days before the period when everything becomes heavy. Cycles of 23, then 42 days. Sleep that no longer carries. Hormone complaints are not imagination.

Our hormone counsel assumes that your perception is a meaningful diagnostic signal. We ask, we sort, we take you seriously. A good history plus targeted diagnostics often produces a picture you can actually work with.

What happens in a hormone consultation with Elisa Mahlberg

A thorough first appointment typically has three parts:

  • Structured history. Cycle (length, flow, pain), PMS/PMDD pattern, mood, sleep, skin and hair, body weight, medical history, family, current medication, fertility plans, contraception. Feel free to bring your cycle-app tracking from the last months.
  • Gynecological exam and ultrasound. Uterus, ovaries, endometrium and – where indicated – signs of polycystic ovaries.
  • Counsel and a shared plan. Whether hormone diagnostics are useful depends on your symptoms, the cycle phase and the specific question. If a blood draw is medically useful, we discuss the right timing in the cycle in advance. We interpret the results together and develop the next steps from there.

Irregular periods, PMS, PMDD and other hormone imbalance topics – honestly framed

Our hormone consultation covers what is meaningful in a gynecology practice:

  • Irregular periods: cycles that stay much shorter or longer than usual, breakthrough bleeding, absent periods.
  • PMS and PMDD: from mild premenstrual changes up to premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Evidence-based options, transparently discussed.
  • Suspected PCOS: PCOS is a focus area of our work. Details on our PCOS treatment page.
  • Perimenopause and menopause: continued on our menopause consultation page.

Our scope: Elisa Mahlberg is a consultant in gynecology and obstetrics, not an endocrinologist. For complex endocrinological questions outside the gynecological field (e.g. pituitary issues, adrenal work-ups, severe thyroid autoimmune disease) we refer to an endocrinology practice and continue from there.

With hormone complaints it is rarely just about a single value. It is about understanding what your body is telling you through the symptoms — and what truly helps in the individual case.

When is the right time for a hormone consultation?

Whenever you feel that hormonal topics are noticeably shaping your everyday life. Concrete reasons include:

  • cycles that have been clearly shortened, lengthened or irregular for three or more months,
  • severe PMS or PMDD affecting work, relationships, sleep,
  • suspected PCOS,
  • perimenopause-related symptoms (hot flushes, sleep, mood),
  • fertility questions involving your cycle,
  • coming off the pill and questions around the return of your cycle.

You do not need a finished picture. It is enough to describe what you observe. The rest we sort together.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about hormone consultations

We are gynecologists focusing on gynecology-related hormone topics – cycle, ovarian hormones, basic thyroid diagnostics, menopause, PCOS. An endocrinologist focuses on the whole endocrine system (pituitary, adrenals, rare thyroid conditions, metabolism). Many questions can be answered with us; for complex cases we refer.

We can test all the common hormone values. Which values make sense and when the blood draw should happen depends on the specific question, your symptoms and the cycle phase. We discuss this individually with you.

The medical consultation and medically justified baseline hormone diagnostics are covered under statutory insurance. Extended diagnostics without strict medical indication (e.g. AMH without fertility context, close-interval cycle monitoring out of interest) are IGeL services. Costs are discussed transparently beforehand.

PMDD is more than a bad mood — it is a recognized diagnosis. Depending on the symptom picture, there are different treatment options. Which therapy makes sense in your situation, we discuss individually.

There is no single "right" way for everyone. We are happy to discuss with you why you want to come off, what contraception might make sense afterwards, and whether there are known topics like PCOS or endometriosis to consider. See also our contraception advice.

We plan first appointments so that we can talk through everything that matters for your situation. The exact length depends on your questions and the diagnostics.
