Elisa Mahlberg, gynecologist in Dormagen – private consultation

As a private patient or self-payer, you have access to the full range of services at our practice — and additionally to diagnostic examinations beyond the statutory health insurance scope. Medical care is the same for every patient, regardless of insurance status. The difference lies in billing and in access to extended diagnostics.

Private or self-pay appointment in Dormagen: what defines the care

Private or self-pay appointments make sense for patients who want to use specific additional services — for example diagnostic examinations that are not part of the German statutory health insurance catalogue. A second opinion on an existing finding or an English-language appointment are also common reasons.

Whether you are privately insured or a statutorily insured patient paying for a specific service: medical care is the same. The difference lies in the scope of services and in the billing.

How a private or self-pay appointment in Dormagen works

A typical private or self-pay visit runs in three parts:

  • History conversation. We discuss your history, current complaints, prior findings, medication and personal questions. The scope of the appointment is planned to fit your concern.
  • Gynecological exam. Ultrasound, smear, palpation. Depending on the question, additional examinations may make sense — for example breast or transvaginal ultrasound. Which diagnostic workup fits your situation, we discuss individually.
  • Result discussion and plan. Findings are framed in plain language. We explain transparently which steps are covered by statutory insurance, which are IGeL services and which are billed privately per GOÄ.

Private gynecology and IGeL services – the full spectrum

Extended diagnostics without a medical indication are generally not a statutory health insurance benefit and can be performed as a self-pay service. Even baseline hormone diagnostics is not automatically a covered benefit. The deciding factor is always whether a medical indication exists. Commonly requested self-pay and private services include:

  • Extended screening: breast ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound as additional examinations alongside cancer screening. Details on our cancer screening page.
  • Hormone diagnostics: additional hormone testing outside statutory indication. Details on our hormone consultation page.
  • Pregnancy: additional ultrasound beyond the standard scans, kinesiology taping for pregnancy-related complaints. Details on our prenatal care page.
  • Menopause: individual hormone-therapy counsel and follow-up. Details on our menopause consultation page.
  • Holistic care: phytotherapy counsel, gynecological taping, micronutrient placement. Details on our holistic women's health page.
  • Second opinion: framing of findings or treatment recommendations from other practices.
  • English-language appointments: for international patients or where English-language counsel is needed.

Private and self-pay services are billed transparently per the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). Before any service, you get a clear estimate — so you can decide calmly.

For us, "private" does not mean "better" — it means "billed differently". Medical care is the same for every patient.

When does a private gynecology appointment make sense?

A private consultation or targeted self-pay service is particularly useful in these situations:

  • you are privately insured or entitled to Beihilfe and want a practice with transparent GOÄ billing,
  • you are statutorily insured and want specific services outside the statutory scope,
  • you want a second opinion on a finding or recommendation from another practice,
  • you want an appointment for a specific topic such as PCOS, menopause questions or fertility counsel,
  • you are an international patient and would like an English-language private appointment.

A private appointment does not mean you will receive a private invoice every time — many topics are fully covered by your regular insurance card. We discuss transparently what makes sense when.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about private consultations

Medically, there is no difference — every service is offered at the same quality. Differences lie in the billing (statutory via insurance card, private per GOÄ with an invoice to you or your insurer) and in access to services outside statutory guidelines.

IGeL stands for Individuelle Gesundheitsleistungen — medical services that can be useful but are not part of the German statutory health insurance catalogue. Even baseline hormone diagnostics is not automatically a covered benefit — the deciding factor is always whether a medical indication exists. Before every self-pay service we openly discuss benefit, limits and cost.

In our practice all services are available regardless of insurance status — we distinguish by medical indication and billing path. As a private patient or self-payer, you can choose extended diagnostics that, without a statutory indication, are performed as a self-pay service.

It depends on the scope of the appointment and the services included. Billing follows the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). We discuss costs transparently before the appointment – or before any individual IGeL service – so you can decide calmly.

You receive a GOÄ invoice after the appointment and submit it yourself to your insurer (and, if applicable, Beihilfe); reimbursement goes directly to your account. We support follow-up questions from insurers and provide additional documentation on request. International patients receive a detailed invoice suitable for most global insurance providers.

Yes. Many statutorily insured patients use specific self-pay services — for example an additional breast ultrasound during a check-up, or extended diagnostics for a particular topic. The service is billed separately per GOÄ; the rest of your care runs via your regular insurance card.
